Service Requirement

Typically, if an employer provides a qualified retirement plan, employees must be permitted to become participants if they have completed one year of service (1,000 hours of service in 12 consecutive months). For some retirement plans, a service requirement of two years of service may be available for employer contributions if they are immediately 100 percent vested. Employers have the right to allow less stringent service requirements for their plan.

Age Requirements

Along with completing one year of service, employers typically set a minimum age requirement of 21, though employers may allow their plan to include employees younger than age 21. There is no maximum age requirement.
