If there is a silver lining to the EBRI survey's findings, it is that most of these same workers feel they would save more if their employers made it conducive to do so. According to this and previous surveys:
- More than 70 percent of the surveyed workers not currently contributing to their employer-sponsored retirement plans said an employer matching contribution of up to five percent of their salary deferral elections would make them more likely to participate.
- Two-thirds of non-participants indicated they would be very or somewhat likely to remain in their employer's plan if automatically enrolled.
- The same majority of non-participants said they would be more likely to participate in an employer-sponsored plan if it included an investment option that automatically becomes more conservative as their retirement date approaches.
- Over half (55 percent) would like to see a feature in their 401(k) plan that automatically raises workers' contributions by a fixed amount or percentage when they receive pay increases.
