A popular form of the profit sharing plan is the employee stock-option plan (ESOP). While precise terms vary by plan, the general ESOP functions as a defined contribution plan that invests primarily in common stock of the sponsoring company. In addition, the plan sponsor may contribute shares of company stock as a profit sharing contribution, thus building each participant's share of the company's outstanding stock.
