Most states insist that an executor be named to handle the distribution of property mentioned in the will. If none is named, the court will appoint an administrator who will have to post a bond in an amount that depends upon the value of the estate.

The executor should preferably live in the same state as the grantor, be experienced in financial matters, and be the same age or younger than the person making the will. Banks and trust companies may also be named as executors.
