Included in their estate is a paid-for lake house ($350,000), personal stocks and bonds ($5.3 million), and qualified plan assets from a 401(k) plan and profit sharing plan (total: $6.1 million).

John has recently retired from Evergreen Technology, where he last served as CFO. He and Mary took a chance and were initial investors when Evergreen went public in 1988; he had been an employee with the company since its founding in 1983, and was confident in the software manufacturer's future. Today his stock in the company is worth $3.5 million.

The Stevens children, Johnny and Lynn, are developing successful careers of their own. Johnny is married and has one child. Lynn is too involved in her career to settle down and marry right now, but figures she will do so one day.
