Medicare

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) administers Medicare, the nation's largest health insurance program, and the number of recipients continues to grow. In 2010, Medicare covered nearly 50 million Americans, and that number is projected to climb steadily, reaching more than 90 million by 2050 ("2010 Annual Report of the Boards of Trustees of the Federal Hospital Insurance and Federal Supplementary Medical Insurance Trust Funds," August 2010, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.) Medicare is a health insurance program for people 65 years of age and older, some disabled people under 65 years of age, and people with permanent kidney failure.

Medicare Premiums for 2011

Part A: (Hospital Insurance) Premium

  • Most people do not pay a monthly Part A premium because they or a spouse has 40 or more quarters of Medicare-covered employment.
  • The Part A premium is $248.00 per month for people having 30-39 quarters of Medicare-covered employment.
  • The Part A premium is $450.00 per month for people who are not otherwise eligible for premium-free hospital insurance and have less than 30 quarters of Medicare-covered employment.

Part B: (Medical Insurance) Premium

  • The Part B premium is $115.40 per month* for individuals with income under $82,000.
  • However, most beneficiaries in 2011 actually continue to pay the 2010 $96.40 or $110.50 premium amount. These are beneficiaries who have the Social Security Administration (SSA) withhold their Part B premium and have incomes of $85,000 or less (or $170,000 or less for joint filers).
* Note: If your income is above $85,000 (single) or $170,000 (married couple), then your Medicare Part B premium may be higher than $115.40 per month.
